So-much-good-music-my-head-exploded: Coachella Days 2&3
Monday, April 26th, 2010

SATURDAY started a bajillion times better than Friday.  After a yummie breakfast and a little sun by the pool, we picked up our VIP wristbands, and stopped by Benj from O.A.R.’s house for a beer. We got to the grounds in time to see White Rabbits (who I hadn’t heard before but really liked), en route to Beach House.

EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROES was one of the bands I had been dying to see.  They were just as theatrical and entertaining as I’d imagined. The show had gotten off to a late start because Alex, the lead singer, dropped the mic stand on a spectator who’d fought their way to the front row to worship at the feet of ES&TMZ:

Naturally, they finished off the set with the one of the happiest songs: “Home.”

Other notable wins from Saturday included The XX, a super ambient and trance-like trio.  Definitely download “Islands” and “VCR”  if you haven’t already. They were followed by Hot Chip, just like they were when I saw them again this past week at Terminal 5 in NYC.   (I’m not a groupie, but it was a friends bday and he had already got us tickets)

Dirty Projectors was another band I’d been wanting to see that I saw at Coachella.  I also saw some serious ravers, including David Guetta—who’s basically done every song you always hear when you’re out in New York—and Tiesto.

We also saw the Dead Weather, Jack White’s latest super group.  He’s a rock and roll star, plain and simple and Alison Mosshart of the Kills has an amazing, spooky and intense voice that works beautifully with the hard rock big guitar distorted blues of the band and Jack’s phenomenal drumming.SIDE NOTE: Definitely see the documentary “It Might Get Loud” featuring electric guitarists Jack White, Jimmy Page & the Edge.

SUNDAY- best day of the three

We came in on the earlier side, unfortunately missing Local Natives by a few minutes (download “Stillness is the Move”). Fortunately we didn’t miss Mayer Hawthorne—old fashioned, brassy soul/funk straight out of the 70’s who has incredible stage presence.  Next we saw Florence + The Machine, a current obsession of mine.  People were jammed in the tent like sardines and nobody was complaining because it was understood that everyone needed to see her.  She has a heavenly voice and killer style.  Her red locks and gold shorts under a flowy, see-through chiffon, bohemian dress, made her my style-icon of the weekend.

She is an amazing talent and just as likable on stage.  We decided to stick around the Gobi tent for Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Berkin) to see her first-ever live show.  She was cute and has a lot of potential.  I loved her effortless rock’n'roll jean and tank ensemble which was perfect for Coachella.

Jonsi of Sigur Ros was unreal; one of the best shows of the weekend.  His solo show was mesmerizing and perfect for a brief chillax.  We sat in the sun and ate BBQ pork sandwiches to recharge for Miike Snow (one of my favorite live shows).

The hectic Sunday schedule demanded we move after 4 songs to catch Phoenix (my absolute favorite band of the last 3 years besides U2).  They played all of the good ones including one I’m currently stuck on, “Love Like a Sunset.”

Thom Yorke and Flea (aka Atoms For Peace) was the perfect ending to Coachella.  Perhaps the best overall show of the weekend.  Just mind-blowing visually and audibly. Thom is a genius, Flea is an animal. The whole show was just outrageous. My Flip Cam lens had been neglected all weekend and was covered in grime, so you can’t get the whole feel for the scene.  I spare you the video.

The headliner Sunday may have been Gorillaz, which were pretty great, but Thom & Flea were the real showpiece and the most perfect way I could think of to end a wonderful weekend.

COACHELLA DAY 1 BOOYAHS
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

So another year’s Coachella has come and gone – each is different from all the rest and this year may have been the best for a number of reasons.
Friday, Day 1 – “Was this worth it?” Thanks to Jigga, Yes.

After about a 4 hour drive from LAX, we were excited and exhausted. We’d woken up at about 5:30am EST and it was now 6pm PST and we were just getting to the fest.

jake_fest

We missed Yeasayer (ugh), Avett Brothers and Wale – disappointing but we had a long weekend ahead. She & Him welcomed us to the show, but The Specials were the first real highlight. Original masters of Ska, on fire.

specials

The night had ups and downs.  Passion Pit was whiny, lame and crippled by a novice running their soundboard.  Big disappointment as I had seen them open for Phoenix last summer in Central Park and was blown away by how great they were.  I made the mistake of tweeting about meeting them in my hotel lobby, and thinking they were all great, “minus the lead singer (who was a dud).”  The singer, Michael Angelakos, read my tweet and twittered back almost immediately,

mangelakos @danielleasnyder hey! That’s not nice.I’ve been doing press all day and barely slept. Sorry for bad first impression!” (with a few follow-up tweets)

Oops.  On the other hand, Grizzly Bear brought it Friday, but we ducked out early to catch La Roux. La Roux killed it to the howls of thousands of worshiping girls (and a few dudes).  She was super confident, basically owned the stage and wanted you to get involved, which everyone so enthusiastically did: watch video HERE

LCD Soundsystem had the main stage soon after La Roux finished up.  They never disappoint and catching them right after sunset (my favorite part of the day there) was good.  But the night was kind of dragging.

Then came Vampire Weekend and signs of life.  They were upbeat and put on a great show (though Ezra’s commentary between songs was somewhat awkward). watch my ghetto video HERE

We left Vampire Weekend early, only to stand in a crowd of about 100,000 sweaty, tripping hippies for 45minutes, waiting for Jay-Z to finally take the stage.  It was 11:15pm, we were beat, we were being tested.  I almost had an anxiety attack, I almost gave up.  Good thing I didn’t:

Jay-Z's much anticipated "Empire State of Mind"

Jay-Z's much anticipated "Empire State of Mind"

Simply put, he’s the greatest entertainer out there right now.  He will never disappoint.  HOVA was the superstar that saved Friday. The only bummer – we gave up on him.  After Empire State of Mind, with the skyline floating by behind him we peaced to avoid the aftermath craziness trying to leave the fest grounds.

What did we miss?  Oh, nothing much (ughhhhhhh): watch how nuts his duet with wifey Beyonce was HERE

Oh, and how adorable is Beyonce’s Coachella get-up? She’s always so on it.  Day 2 recap to come…

Sunday Funday to Music Monday: Miike Snow @ Bowery Ballroom
Monday, March 29th, 2010

Phantom of the Opera white masks. Strobe lights. Smoke machines. And quite possibly the best DJing skills I’ve ever seen: Miike Snow literally blew it out of the water last night at Bowery Ballroom.

Andrew Wyatt electropopping

Andrew Wyatt electropopping

The electropop band from Stockholm, Sweden formed in 2007, consisting of American songwriter Andrew Wyatt and Swedish producers Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (known among other things for their Grammy winning work on Brittany Spears’ ‘Toxic.’).

“Should I even bother playing it? No, it’s just a song you’d know… if you shop or watch tv… I’m not trying to be cocky but…” were  Andrew Wyatt’s introductory words as he transitioned into his hit song, Animal. With the hands waving in the air and the rave-like dance party on the floor, I’m pretty sure Andrew knew he could do no wrong.

There wasn’t a down moment—well maybe one song I hadn’t heard before that was just good, not great. Lucky for me, I’ll be seeing them again at Coachella. Enjoy the pics and download Silvia, Animal, and Burial if you don’t already have them on your pod. [click HERE for a brief video I took of their intro] xxDanielle

Song of the Day
Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Jodie I ate at Indochine last night with the Gilt Group PR Team.  We had such a good time we were literally sitting at our table laughing for 4 hours!  Randomly Isaac Mizrahi (who had talked about us with Danielle Kryrillos) sat one table away, and Nina Garcia was sitting at a nearby booth.  Earlier in the day we sat next to Zac Posen at lunch.  New York is a small small world.

New York’s Best Kept Secret & Latest Shazams
Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Last night I went to my all time favorite New York spot, Back Fence (on Bleeker & Thompson).  It reminds me of my days in downtown Nashville—great live music and a low key random crowd of people.  Last night Walter— an 80 something former 3 star marine who parties hardy—was in full throttle, pretty much dictating what the set list would be and attempting to get on stage and share stories between sets.  Good thing he knows his music.  He stood next to the stage (he’s not allowed on) to sing a duet of one of his many requests, “Moonshadow.”  They eventually cut him off which was unfortunate, but he’ll be back tomorrow so no one worried too much about it.

and Here are some things we’re enjoying now as 2009 wraps up:

HEAR

1. Laid Back’s “Bakerman”  if you want something chill, and watch the quirky video below ’cause it’s pretty ridiculous:

2. Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” kicks ass in a very instrumental way (it’s all instrumental and Mike plays over 20 instruments in it). This was Virgin Records first recording—download part 1 (the full song is 45 min). It’s like the beginning to every good movie—it’s all anticipation.

We <3 Alicia Keys, and I’m slightly obsessed with her and Jay Z’s duet in Empire State of Mind. We can’t guarantee that you’ll sound like her if you wear the Liat necklace, but you’ll definitely look rock’n'roll glam. Click here to get the Liat collar and click here to get her voice.

SEE-HEAR-WEAR-HAIR: Danni’s picks
Monday, October 19th, 2009

SEE The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame + Museum at the NYC Annex in SoHo.  I went with some friends on what would have been John Lennon’s 69th birthday to check out JOHN LENNON: THE NEW YORK CITY YEARS exhibit produced by Yoko Ono, and was blown away by the museum.  As you walk through the exhibit, you wear headphones that magically adjust to play a perfectly in sync “soundtrack” to your experience.  While you’re checking out Johnny Cash’s customized boots and original guitar, “Walk The Line” comes on… as you walk over to Michael Jackson’s handwritten scrapbook of lyrics and gloves, “Bad” blares.  I read an amusing handwritten letter Paul Simon had written to Art Garfunkel from camp (mainly about babes and hot chicks) while Simon & Garfunkel classics played on my headset.  I dorked out– literally could have spent all day there, and I may have to go back again soon to read all the bits I missed in the nooks and crannies.  It was great inspiration for DANNIJO.  You’ll be sure to see some references in the upcoming collection.  Definitely worth checking out–especially if you’re a local.

This Forté: the uncensored DANNIJO Interview with the Man Behind the Music, JOHN FORTé
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

“…And for so many years I was looking behind me and I was looking in front me and I wasn’t able to appreciate the moment—that’s the greatest gift I think that I’ve had as a result of everything… the one thing that we have going for us is right here, right now and I love that.  I love that I not only know that but that I live that and I recognize that to my core.” —John Forte

”John Forté grab the mic roots sway it this way…”  You may have heard his kickass snarky solo in Wyclefs Tryin’ To Stay Alive or maybe you heard about him when he was nominated for a Grammy for his work with the Fugees.  And, sadly, you may have forgotten about him—he had a not-so-brief 7 year sabbatical behind bars (FCI Loretto, a federal prison in central Pennsylvania).  In 2000, Forté was arrested at Newark International Airport after accepting a briefcase containing $1.4 million worth of liquid cocaine; he was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and conspiracy to distribute.
