New York’s Best Kept Secret & Latest Shazams
Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Last night I went to my all time favorite New York spot, Back Fence (on Bleeker & Thompson). It reminds me of my days in downtown Nashville—great live music and a low key random crowd of people. Last night Walter— an 80 something former 3 star marine who parties hardy—was in full throttle, pretty much dictating what the set list would be and attempting to get on stage and share stories between sets. Good thing he knows his music. He stood next to the stage (he’s not allowed on) to sing a duet of one of his many requests, “Moonshadow.” They eventually cut him off which was unfortunate, but he’ll be back tomorrow so no one worried too much about it.

Back Fence has two or three entertainers every night playing every style of music, a great atmosphere with lots of beer on tap and free peanuts that you shell on a sawdust covered floor (my personal favorite). They ‘re open at 4 pm everyday (earlier on weekends) and close around 4 am. Whatever you do, don’t ask Mark to sing “Aint No Sunshine” because it was his New Year’s resolution not to. It’s a shame because he’s so damn good at it. I managed to get him to reluctantly play it one last time last night.
