John Forte + Elew: Meeting of the Minds

There’s no better gift than the gift of live music. Especially when it keeps on giving into the wee hours of the morning. For Jodie’s wedding I gave her the gift of music: Our dear friends John Forte and ELEW flew in for the occasion and performed separately (John performed for the wedding ceremony and ELEW performed both on the piano and as a dj). My favorite part from the whole weekend was the late-night impromptu jam session ELEW and John had in our hotel lobby. The two musicians hadn’t met before the weekend, so the ongoing joke is that their collaboration is a DANNIJO Production–brought to you by none other than Danni + Jo.

We’re glad our boy Lyle Owerko didn’t miss an opp to capture the whole free-style session in stellar Owerko form. What app was that by the way @lyleowerko???? Happy watching.

Eddie the Earring Goes to Therapy

We’ve got big news. It’s actually small news because he’s small, like 1 gram 2.8 inches small. His name’s Eddie. Eddie Apricot. He’s an earring. He was conceived 9 months ago poolside with my former lover Leandra Medine (she’s since gotten married to a hell of a mench named Abie). More on that later. Actually more on Eddie later.

Eddie is my pride and joy. He’s all I’ve talked about for the last 48 hours since I gave birth. See my ultrasound below.

With his sparkly hairline, chicass Miu Miu Mary Janes and effortlessly cool Rag + Bone candy cane striped cape, he’s impossibly cool.

He’s so cool we take him everywhere. Like right now, he’s sitting tea-side at Soho House. His life is so glam–two days in–that I sometimes worry about him. Will he skyrocket to the top and miss out on his childhood? Will the other jewelry hate him because he can eat whatever he wants yet remains impossibly thin? Will he get tired of riding the lobes of luxury?

DJ: When did you first realize you wanted to be a designer?
JCDC: Initially I wanted to be an artist. My mom had a factory, so I decided to pursue fashion. As a designer, I’ve always been drawn to more conceptual art like installations – that’s why I’ve done unique work at the intersection of art and fashion.

DJ: Do you have a muse?
JCDC: I have had so many muses in my life. Generally women who love my clothes have a very particular beauty. They have a strong character, and they have a real personality. I have been dressing women from Farrah Fawcett to Lady Gaga and lots of women like Lauren Bacall. I really love to dress particular women — women with character.

DJ: Where do you find inspiration?
JCDC: Inspiration is everywhere. I’ve been designing for almost 40 years now. It’s first an accident, a specific accident. It’s things that I can crystallize in my subconscious when I see two images at the same time and put them together. It can be a camouflage with a teddy bear. It can be an American flag with a fluorescent color next to it. Everything is inspiration, but my number one inspiration is music.

DJ: What music do you love?
JCDC: In the beginning I was very involved with rock ‘n’ roll. Then, I was really involved with the hip-hop scene because all the artists like Jay Z and Kanye West started to wear my sweaters in the nineties. Today I’m very into electronic music. I love LCD Sound System, all sorts of vintage-electro cast work and things like that. I love everything that is particular and bizarre.

DJ: Are there any music documentaries that you saw that really inspired you?
JCDC: The first one was called Blow-Up from the sixties, and it made me really become a designer. Berlin Calling is the story of a DJ in Berlin, and it’s also a fantastic movie.

DJ: What’s your most-coveted item in your personal closet?
JCDC: My shoes. I’ve been wearing the same shoes from Berluti for 20 years.

DJ: What’s your favorite restaurant in Paris?
JCDC: My favorite restaurant is La Closerie de Lilas. It’s 100 years old, and Hemingway used to go there.

DJ: What’s something you believe to be true that most people disagree with?
JCDC: I believe in God, generosity and kindness.

DJ: Most fascinating person:
JCDC: Malcolm McLaren

DJ: Favorite movie:
JCDC: Seven Samurai

DJ: Favorite vacation spot:
JCDC: Japan, China, Morocco and my home in the South of France

CR: My girls at @Dannijo do a great job and have a very recognizable “Instagram style” which I love. My husband James takes most of my Instagram picture (the ones with me in them!) but he just started his own account @JamesEdwardConran so I’m excited about that. I also love to see @behatiiprinsloo‘s instagrams as its nice to know where in the world my old buddy is at. For clothing designers I think @Zac_Posen does a great job too.

DJ: Favorite vacation spot:
CR: I love Botswana in Africa. It’s so remote. To get anywhere you have to take a little two-seater plane and then an off-road vehicle. When you get wherever you’re going it’s the most serene, beautiful experience. No TV, no telephone, no internet, just amazing scenery and nature. If I could escape that way every year I would.

DJ: Beauty secret:
CR: The reality is, just get your sleep and drink lots of water. Those two things are worth more than any product you can buy.

DJ: Favorite workout:
CR: Dancing! I love to dance. I even try to incorporate it into my modeling.

DJ: Favorite lipstick/mascara:
CR: If you want a really thick serious no messing around mascara, Sephora makes a great one called “Outrageous Volume.” It comes in a small container but packs quite a punch. For lipstick I really like Calvin Klien “Rouge A Levre” which is this great middle ground between red and orange.

DJ: Must read:
CR: This summer, like everyone else in the world, I was hooked on The Hunger Games! I was bored in an airport one day so I bought and started book number one and within five days I had read the whole trilogy!

DJ: Must see:
CR: Les Miserables! I’ve always loved the musical, but the film took it to another dimension. There is so much emotion in everyone’s performance. Personally, I think it’s the best film of the decade.

DJ: Best NY or online shopping:
CR: TheFancy.com is like this great curated online playground of every cool thing you never knew you wish you had. Unlike sites like Pinterest, the great thing about The Fancy is you can buy everything right from the site!

DJ: Favorite handbag:
CR: At the moment I’m loving this eggplant Z Spoke bag my friend Zac Posen gave me. It has this great pink interior detail and holds everything (including my iPad mini!) just perfectly.

DJ: Song on repeat:
CR: “Who am I?” from the Les Miserable soundtrack. Hugh Jackmans performance is just so earnest and real – told you I’m obsessed with Les Mis!

DJ: Your motto:
CR: It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.

DJ: Favorite DANNIJO piece:
CR: My bib gets me comments and compliments everywhere I go. It’s quite the conversation piece!

DJ: Best advice someone ever gave you:
CR: Someone once told me to make sure I can leave this industry the same girl I came in, and that’s something I’ve always kept in mind. I try to stick true to my values and beliefs, even when peer pressure is strong.

DJ: Favorite blog or magazine:
CR: For my technology/social media news I go to Mashable.com. If I want to be entertained by the best nonsense from the Internet I always go to Buzzfeed (they have great apps for iPhone and iPad too by the way). If I want fashion news I’ll usually go check out The Cut blog.

DJ: Something people don’t know about you:
CR: I used to collect rocks. My mom still has my entire collection labeled from different countries and cities around the world.

DJ: If you could have dinner with anyone in the world from past or present, who would it be and why?
CR: Elizabeth Taylor hands down. I don’t get star struck, but that was one lady I probably would have been speechless around if I had ever had the honor of meeting her. I love her films and she just seems like one of the most naturally glamorous women in the world. She also had great style. In a time before celebrity stylists and millions of self proclaimed fashionistas Liz went her own road and always looked amazing doing so.
