BROOKLYN'S IT GIRL: BEX GUNTHER

I met Bex when she shot me for a project a few weeks ago, and her energy was palpable. When she was done shooting me, I asked if I could shoot her-- I couldn't believe someone so beautiful was on the wrong side of the camera! Not only is she stunning, but she has a powerful inner beauty that radiates from within. She has a distinct creative eye and a magical spirit. We chatted about what brought her to New York, her love life and everything in between... we also had fun playing dress up in DANNIJO paired with some of my favorite new vintage finds including a fringe silk kimono and Namathe tee. Read my interview with Bex below.

Hometown:
Los Angeles, CA.

Profession:
Describe yourself in 3 words:
Excited, Determined, Free-Spirited.

What do you love most about Brooklyn?
The slower pace, the mesh of industrial and residential, the food!

Where are your go-to spots for food and drink?
Walter Foods is amazing. As are Lilia and Llama Inn. I always take people to Llama Inn when they come and visit me! Alls Well is great for brunch, cozy and they make the best house-made sausage patties around.

Your go-to workout:
Biking! It allows me to explore, plus I don't even feel like I'm working out!

What's the last amazing book you read and what was your takeaway?
Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarisa Estes. The book is all about re-finding your inner wild wolf as a woman in a society that wants to tame us all.

If you could have dinner with anyone past or present who would it be and why?
My grandmother on my mom's side. She passed away when my mother was a teenager, but there is something so stunning and intriguing about her in every photo I see.

We spoke a bit about love and relationships when I photographed you last week. How has the meaning of Love and relationships evolved for you over the years?
For me, love and relationships used to be about perfection, about an ideal. Now, I view my relationships as a daily commitment. Life is ever changing, all we know is now. Love without expectations.

How is being in a relationship with a man vs a woman different? And has having experienced both made you a more understanding, open-minded lover? Relationships with men can be easier in a way, as they're not so emotional. Relationships with women are like onions: there are so many layers to explore. Dating and loving both sexes has expanded my vision of what love is and can be. It's taught me to follow my instincts and never love through expectations. Love is love, and boy, is it beautiful.

How do you find balance and zen?
Through a connection to movement, changing scenery, and nature. I instinctually want to be on the move, always. I love changes of environment, which is why travel is so strongly connected to my personal happiness. I'm happiest when I feel free to explore the world around me. Living in NYC, I accomplish this by exploring somewhere new every Monday with my wife. We've been to Montauk, Philadelphia, Cold Springs, Beacon, DC and are planning more exploration in the upcoming months.

Words you live by:
"Go."

Something most people don't know about you:
I grew up in a religious cult that my family left when I was 13 years old.

Your latest obsession:
Campfire incense, Ashawagandha powder and the book, American Gods

Your favorite instagrammer(s):
Hm. I love @C_L_O and @charliexbarker's insta style.

Your vice:
Coffee table books, home goods, sweet treats.

Favorite band or song on repeat:
SofiTukker's "Fuck They" (not out yet), Patty Pravo's "Pensiero Stupendo", and Allan Rayman's "13."

Your go-to DANNIJO piece and how you style it:
The Vert earrings! Perfect with everything. Eye-catching. Outfit defining.

Continue the party with late-night drinks at Parker & Lenox, a speakeasy that regularly flies musicians in from New York or Buenos Aires to perform at weekends, and for salsa dancing, Club San Luis in Roma Sur is an experience in itself. It has a 20-piece live band, and the dancing is phenomenal.
